Blooms of the week – Vicki from Wildflower Waiheke

“The Spring Undone Florist course is coming up soon so I have been trying to put into words my design process when I am working on a bouquet. Thinking back to Michaela’s end of summer wedding, for example, I remember we started with a colour palette that would work well against the neutral tones of the bridal party-

from dusky pinks to velvety magentas and plums in the blooms with muted olive and grey greens in the foliage. To work in with the vineyard setting we decided on dahlias (Cafe Au Lait of course! ) scabiosa, zinnias, roses, lisianthus, olive, Eucalyptus, monkey apple- mostly sourced from a local flower farm and roadsides. We wanted an organic unstructured look so I began with the foliage and let the natural lines of the branches dictate the shape of the bouquet. Hard to put into words how I decide where to place each bloom- for me it’s definitely about colour groupings, and contrasts in texture, and placing flowers on different plains so the arrangement has movement and life- and so it looks as unarranged and “undone” as possible!”
