Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship…

Mary: I’m working as a nurse with premature babies and support the little ones in their difficult start into life. Philipp: I’m developing battery systems for electrical cars and try to make the world a little bit cleaner.

We are both from Germany and a couple for five years now. Even if we are quite young we have already collected a lot of life experience and thats why our relationship had a specific depth right from the beginning. Certain values like honesty and appreciation play an essential role in our life and we can’t wait to pass them on to our kids. What makes us special is that we sometimes do things in unusual ways…  With the ‘wedding thing’ we couldn‘t find a way which really suited us and our complicated family situation.

In German there’s a quote which says:  “Because of love you do the strangest things. Some even marry.“ And some are even crazy enough to plan the wedding without telling your partner – like I did!

Tell us about your main outfits:

While Philipp was sleeping, I spent night after night on Pinterest, Etsy and wedding blogs. Looking at all the stunning vintage and boho dresses, I knew that the choice was limited as there were just a few weeks left until our holiday and the flight to New Zealand. Besides that I had to get it in Philipps mind that he absolutely needed suspenders and a new jacket with a handkerchief for our “photoshoot”. (The “photoshoot in New Zealand” was my christmas gift for him and my white lie for nearly everything I had to keep from him in the next few weeks).

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day?

Mary: The celebrant wrote me 30min before she was meant to pick me up from our apartment, that she got stuck in traffic and would not be able to be there in time. I was close to tears and I saw the whole surprise fail at the last minute. Thank God there was the best “host”, “bridal car driver” and “groom-entertainer” Myrddin. I think I had one of the most profound and emotional conversations on our way to the beach. About trust, about the marriage and of course about how Philipp will react when he sees me in my bridal dress.

Philipp: Mary locked me in the bedroom for 3 hours while she was getting styled “for the photoshoot”. When I finally was allowed out, I found a message on the door. So I had 10 minutes to get dressed till I got on my way to Karekare beach. Walking along the beach I was focused on finding my girl in her short blue dress she was expected to wear for the photoshoot. Instead of Mary I just found Myrddin, our host, who came straight towards me. Instead of answering all my questions, he asked me to  please close my eyes and trust him. He lead me across the beach and when I opened my eyes there was my beautiful girl in this awesome white dress.

Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together?

In our opinion, openness and trust are one of the most important keys to a happy marriage (we just recognise this doesnt fit our wedding-story :D) Without trust our story couldn’t have been written like this…
