I am a doctor based in Auckland and I grew up on Waiheke Island. Amanda is originally from South Korea but moved to New Zealand as a child, she works in Public Relations. Exactly three years ago to our wedding day, I met Amanda for the first time.

A mutual friend had schemed to introduce the two of us on a tennis date. As soon as I saw her I knew my life had changed. I eagerly split into teams with her as my doubles partner. I asked her out the next day and a week later I took her on our first date. We are two completely opposite people from different cultures and backgrounds but we share the same aspirations in almost every aspect of life. I could spend every minute with her and still not have enough time. We thought long and hard about how we wanted to get married. We are quite private people so we wondered about eloping in Italy but at the end of the day our loved ones were our priority. With a decision to have it close to home, we decided to have two receptions to make sure we got to talk to the very people we wanted to share it with as well as the intimacy of a small dinner. After the church ceremony, everyone headed next door to the church hall for a decadant afternoon of wine, cheese and four different cakes. We had an Italian style antipasti grazing table with free flowing prosecco and cake with guests spilling out onto the church lawn. It was beautifully curated by Amanda and brought all of our guests together. There were no seating plans and people literally broke bread together. Amanda and I left for our photos at 5pm and arrived later at the restaurant to our immediate family welcoming us as husband and wife. It was a small and intimate evening that brought our two cultures together to share food and stories. Having two receptions meant we could spend time with everyone equally which was very important to us. At both reception venues we used beautiful dried Mark Antonia flowers that we bought home with us and everytime we see them we are taken back to that special day. Being married is an incredible feeling of love, responsibility and commitment. A bad day doesn’t seem so bad when you have each other. A good day seems all the better with the promise of the future. Even though it is just a signed document, we know that whatever happens we will be there till the end. There is something profound about that.
