About two years before our engagement, Jassher and I were walking through the Hastings Rose Gardens and I thought he was acting a little nervous, as if there was something on the tip of his tongue. He gave me a Double Delight rose that he had illegally plucked from the gardens. It became our favourite flower.
Two years later, we were back in that same rose garden with a group of friends and Jassher asked someone to take a photo of the two of us. I didn’t realise what was happening until he reached behind his back to bring out a Double Delight rose, and I noticed something sparkling on the stem – a ring! He got down on one knee and proposed. It turns out, all those years ago he was trying to pluck up the courage to say he loved me. St Matthew-in-the-City was the most beautiful church either of us had ever been in. It was the white stone that captured us, so it wasn’t hard to choose the location for our ceremony. Afterwards, Jassher and I finished taking our official photos earlier than expected so we hopped into our white 57 Oldsmobile and asked our driver to take us to a nearby dairy. We bought $1 lolly bags and orange juice, and it definitely made the dairy clerk’s day! Fashion and ethical clothing is something we are both passionate about, Jassher is constantly sketching designs and I spend a lot of evenings by my sewing machine, so we put a lot of thought into what our bridal party wore. We were over the moon that we could incorporate one of our favourite ethical designers, Kowtow, into the bridal party’s outfits by using Kowtow dresses for the bridesmaids and blazers for the groomsmen. Both of us had ‘wedding fragrances’ that we wore on the day, so now, whenever we spray them, it takes us back to the most incredible day of our lives. Our advice for other couples getting married is, don’t buy a house at the same time as you’re planning the wedding! We bought our first home three days before our wedding and, man oh man, it was so stressful. Also, make sure you set aside some time with your partner and have a date before “the date”, to soak it all in. Being married is the whole shebang: the highs, the lows, and being present with one another throughout it all. Of course we have normal newlywed arguments like, “No, the cups are going in this cupboard.” But other than that, it’s just a whole lot of love and laughter – this is the beginning of the best.
