The Protea is a unique ower due to its woody texture. More common in shades of pink and white, proteas also come in a ‘King’ variety which is larger, with pointier edges. A hardy bloom which can withstand wild fires and is very long lasting as a cut ower. The King Protea is the national flower of South Africa. Proteas are also considered one of the oldest flower varieties in the world. They are grown in New Zealand over Winter, usually from around April and lasting till October (some varieties even longer).
