Turkey is unfamiliar and enchanting – a country packed with ancient history, unreal architecture and vibrant people. We spent six months in Istanbul, a unique city which straddles two continents, Asia and Europe, and every weekend we set out to explore the historic city once named Constantinople.
Istanbul for us was wandering through old mosques and even older churches, becoming intoxicated by the smell of spices in the bazaar and exhilarating taxi rides by wannabe boy racers. While we can’t rave about Istanbul enough, it’s helpful to note that the city is a major stopover to other amazing countries too. With Croatia and Israel a mere two-hour flight away it can be a great spot to set up as a base for other exotic destinations. Istanbul is a standout bucket list destination, but the rest of Turkey also offers adventure, culture, breathtaking sightseeing and much needed dips in the Mediterranean sea.
