Jess & Elliot by Janneke Storm

The beautiful wedding of Jess & Elliot as featured in Issue 14 …

I am a retail manager at Dinosaur Designs by day and run my own floral business, Hanako Studio, by night, and Elliot is an industrial designer. We both love cold weather (hence a wedding in Hobart in July), Japanese food and our cat Lola. We met at a friend’s birthday where Elliot was the venue photographer. He took our picture and we kept bumping into each other all night and it went from there. We have grown up together after meeting at 20 so there have been a few hiccups along the way but this is what makes our relationship so strong. There have been career changes, Elliot finishing his degree, family dramas and loss, but what’s key is that whenever one person is down, the other is keeping it together. We’ve always said our relationship is more like a partnership where honesty and communication is key. We had spoken about getting married for a long time and decided to purchase the ring together. However, Elliot did want to keep a little bit a surprise so didn’t tell me when the ring arrived. The proposal was very ‘us’. We were walking along the river in our favourite suburb and when I was distracted by flowers, Elliot popped the question. We are quite private people and like to keep our relationship for us, so we knew we wanted to celebrate our wedding with only a few special people. We originally booked a venue in Brisbane, but it all went pear-shaped, which in hindsight was the best thing that could have happened. After that, we sat down and really thought about what was important to us and decided to have the wedding somewhere that truly represented us: a winter wedding in Tasmania. Everything went to plan – the staff at MONA were amazing and even though our wedding was tiny compared to most, they made us feel just as important. Flowers were the most important thing to me. I wanted to create my own florals and am so happy that I did. We both agree that seeing each other as I was walking down the aisle was by far the most memorable moment of the day. I had kept it together all day, but as my Dad and I were ready to walk down the aisle, I snuck a peak at Elliot and lost it!
