Tell us about Jewellers Workshop, how long have you been established and who is behind the brand?

Jewellers Workshop is run by me, Caitlin, and my father David. David established Jewellers Workshop in 1987 in the now defunct Century Arcade. He had spent the last few years living a nomadic lifestyle in Europe and the States with my mother, before they returned to NZ. My dad had a background in jewellery, so when they returned he tried to find work within jewellery industry; however he couldn’t find product that he felt passionate and excited about. He had been heavily influenced by the jewellery that they had seen on their travels – big, bold and unique pieces, a style of jewellery that wasn’t available in New Zealand at the time.

Newlywed, and with my big sister on the way they sold up everything (including my mother’s engagement ring, which she has never let him forget!) to set up Jewellers Workshop. Initially Jewellers Workshop specialised in unique one-off hand-made pieces, however David saw demand for a bespoke service, something that was hard to find at the time. He set up a jeweller’s bench in the window and converted the retail space in to an open-plan workshop, and it was a huge success! Very quickly he required more space to accommodate growing demand, so Jewellers Workshop moved to High Street where we remain today.

I entered the business in 2012, I had spent a lot of my childhood and teenage years in the workshop making jewellery for myself or helping out with odd jobs so it felt like a very natural progression.

What sets the Jewellers Workshop brand apart, and what do your clients come to you for?

We specialise in custom made to order jewellery so our clients come to us create beautiful, unique pieces. Every bespoke piece we create is a true one-off, we specially source stones for our clients, work with them to refine their design ideas, and guide them through selecting the materials that will work best for their piece.

Having an open-plan workshop gives our clients a more interactive experience; they can meet with the designers and jewellers who will be making their jewellery and be truly involved throughout the process. This offers a much more meaningful experience than simply buying jewellery off the shelf.Categories: Inspiration-Together Loves - Jewellers WorkshopCategories: Inspiration-Together Loves - Jewellers WorkshopCategories: Inspiration-Together Loves - Jewellers WorkshopCategories: Inspiration-Together Loves - Jewellers Workshop

Where do you find inspiration to keep your designs creative and unique?

We find inspiration from a lot of places! We have a collaborative approach to design, and we like to work with our team of jewellers when creating new designs. We all enjoy playing around with different forms and colours to create interesting new pieces.

Our clients are also a great source of inspiration! Everyone has their own unique aesthetic so we design our bespoke pieces to reflect our client’s unique style. Our design brief will often include incorporating elements of sentimental value, whether this is purely symbolic or re-purposing heritage family pieces, which is always really special. Bold, with clean lines, classic. We’re not interested in following trends – our ethos is that jewellery should be well made in structure and timeless in design. We want everything that we create to be enduring, not fast fashion. We use more metal to create our jewellery than what a lot of other jewellers do, so you won’t find any hollow pieces on our shelves! This makes our jewellery durable, and means that is won’t buckle or break easily.Categories: Inspiration-Together Loves - Jewellers WorkshopCategories: Inspiration-Together Loves - Jewellers Workshop Categories: Inspiration-Together Loves - Jewellers Workshop

What have been some of your favourite commitment pieces and why?

That’s a hard question to answer! Every piece is so different and unique, and has its own special story behind it. My favourite moment is when our clients collect their special piece and their reaction when they see it finished for the first time, the smiles, gasps and sometimes tears. It’s a pleasure to be able to create jewellery that’s so meaningful.

Do you have a favourite metal or stone?

For rings that will be worn every day we love sapphires, rubies and diamonds because they’re really durable, so great for daily wear. All of our diamonds have a premium cut which produces a mesmerising sparkle, and our sapphires range in a beautiful natural kaleidoscope of colours.

Aside from that we love working with all different metals and coloured stones to achieve different looks, and having that range to work with gives us a lot of design scope.

Where do you see Jewellers Workshop in the next five years?

As strange as it sounds, we hope that not too much will change! There are no aspirations of expanding, or opening multiple shops. We love the boutique experience that having a small workshop allows us to offer our clients, as well as the tight knit relationship that our team has. At this size we’re still able to be involved in the day to day designing and making of our jewellery, and we can meet and maintain personal connections with our clients.
