Mara & Joshua by Charmaine Visuals

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship…

We first met through mutual friends while Mara was studying in Australia and Joshua was on a work trip in Sydney.

Ever since then we have always been drawn to each other and bonded over our mutual appreciation for travel, food, music, art and design. A year ago we relocated to Nuremberg, Germany, (Mara’s hometown) We both reached a crossroad in our lives and we were seeking something new and adventurous and always dreamed of a life in Europe so we jumped at the chance. Pretty soon after we got engaged in Prague on a romantic surprise weekend away. It was a pretty big year for us, Joshua learning a new language, adapting to the culture and Mara stepping into a new career but it also taught us so much about one another and proved that our relationship will always get stronger through big challenges. We literally always agree with one of another, have the same dreams and are still astonished how easy it is to love one another.

Tell us about your special day, was there a specific theme or style? Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details…

We really wanted to have a small intimate wedding where we really got to spend quality time with each of the guests. The ceremony and reception was held in the building Mara grew up in, its a beautiful 100 year old building, with an empty abandoned warehouse in the back of the courtyard, which we spent together cleaning up and renovating. It was the perfect minimal industrial feel we dreamed of.

The wedding was only a few days after Christmas and a family friend who sells Christmas trees gifted us the leftover trees. The day before the wedding, our friends and family helped transform the bare courtyard into a forest winter wonderland. After the ceremony we served champagne, mulled wine, pretzels and traditional bratwurst, which made it feel like our own little winter market. Later for the reception guests had to go upstairs to the 5th floor with views overlooking the castle where we had dinner on one big long table with our 30 guests and dined over a 5 course menu. The food was one of the most important elements for us and we really wanted our guests to have a memorable fine dining experience and to really enjoy it over a long time.

Tell us about your main outfits:

Mara tried on some dresses in various bridal shops but they were all overpriced and none of them made her feel like herself. Pretty spontaneously she ordered a bunch of dresses online and loved all of them so it came down to just picking the one. She got some alterations made to make the dress suit her perfectly and was super happy with how it made her look and feel on the day. As soon as we knew it would be a winter wedding, Joshua knew he had to have a woollen tweed suit and a vest of course so survive cold.

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day?

We had surprise moment after the entree where the father of the bride appeared with a little linen bag of truffles from Paris and Personally finely sliced Fresh Truffle over every guests creamy gnocchi. It was really a fun moment that made our guests feel special and a part of the family and as a major foodie he had the time of his life! Another special moment was when we ended the night with a fireworks show on the rooftop, was a special moment especially for all the Australian guys who had the honour to help ignite them and all the girls who were looking up at the lit up sky wrapped in blankets, was the perfect atmosphere to end a special day.
