Mary & Adam by Katrina Nicole

Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship … Before we got married we had been together for over 6 years after being introduced by mutual friends while living in Seattle, WA.

After some ups and downs in the first year of dating, we both realized this was the real deal – we both share a love for life that centers on adventure, live music, friends and family.

After living and loving life in Seattle together for a few years, we made the move down to Northern California for a job opportunity for Adam – Adam works in the field of Organ Donation and Mary works in tech, so California was a good choice.

Shortly after the move the California, we took a trip to Europe with some friends where Adam proposed while on a sailing trip in Montenegro – it was truly the most picturesque setting you could hope for. We spent the rest of the night (and trip) celebrating with our best friends.

When not working or traveling, we can be found hosting get-togethers with friends by our pool or playing with our two corgis, Hazel & Violet. We try not to take life too seriously and enjoy each day as it comes.

Tell us about your special day, was there a specific theme or style? Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details

Since we got engaged shortly after moving to California, we knew we wanted to have the wedding there to encourage our friends and families to visit. We were both drawn to more industrial settings and wanted the location to be easily accessible to the downtown area of Sacramento – when Adam found Beatnik online, we knew right away that it was perfect. We booked with them right away for April 6 – the 7 year anniversary of the day we first met.

Though we were having a spring wedding, I was still very drawn to more moody colors in the décor and floral so I tried to incorporate those while still keeping the overall feel bright enough for spring – hence the white bridesmaid dresses / dark florals & light grey tablecloths / red table runners.

For the centrepieces, I choose living plants as a unique and more sustainable way to bring life to our décor. I sourced all of the plants via my florist and then potted them the week of the wedding – I have a lot of plants around my home and in my garden that I enjoy tending to, so I saw this as a fun way for me to contribute in a hands on way.

My favourite part of the décor was the arch that Adam built by hand – we now have that in our home as a wonderful memento of the day.

While it’s easy to get caught up in the design and décor, at the end of the day we wanted our wedding to be a fun party to celebrate with our friends and family. We had southern food catered from an awesome local restaurant (fried chicken, collard greens, pickled okra!) and the absolute best wedding band ever!

Tell us about your main outfits:

Since most of my family and friends are in Seattle, I took a trip up there to try on dresses. After visiting three shops and trying on tons of dresses I knew I had found the one! I went in with an open mind on style but knew that I wanted something fairly comfortable and preferably not all white. I choose the Galatea dress by Willowby by Watters and it ticked those boxes plus much more. I found the earrings from a designer out of NYC and fell in love with how unique they were – they also slightly resembled my new wedding band, which was a fun aspect.

Adam also wanted something that felt more unique and matched his outgoing personality, so he looked around for quick awhile before he made his final decision. Eventually he found the perfect outfit through the Black Tux and despite some struggle to get the suit from them (they didn’t end up delivering it until the NIGHT BEFORE the wedding!!) he looked perfect!

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day?

Our first look so special – Adam is the crier of the two of us and did not disappoint here. We met in the cactus garden at the state capital and held hands as we turned around. It felt like the moment that the day really began.

Our flower men who did a phenomenal job of breaking the tension right before I walked down the aisle.

Overall, it was the best party of our life – we danced and celebrated with all of our loved ones all night! A sign that the guests had the best time too – we found out the next morning from the band that someone had thrown their bra and it landed on the drummer!

Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together?
Always put each other first – no matter what. Find someone who you genuinely enjoy being around and who makes you laugh every day.
