Tell us a little about yourselves, what you do, what you love, what is unique about you and your relationship…

Paul is an interior designer and I’m a graphic designer. We met when I moved from Brisbane to London, and started working at the same design agency as Paul. On my first day I thought Paul was a tradesman who had come to fix something, and I was slightly confused when he turned up again the next day. Appearances can be deceiving!

When Paul proposed in 2016 we had already accepted an opportunity to move to Dallas in the United States in 2017. So we were unsure whether to have the wedding in Australia, in the UK, or in the USA where we would be living. In the end as we had begun our lives together in the UK and had lived in Hackney for so long we decided it made sense to have the wedding there.

Because we would be living in a different country leading up to the wedding we decided to choose a venue that could take care of the ceremony, reception and catering to make things simpler. Bethnal Green Town Hall is also such a beautiful venue. Planning a wedding in London whilst living in Dallas was a challenge at times but it all worked out.

We were very lucky that many of my friends and family from Australia travelled the long distance to be there, along with some of Paul’s family from Orkney so it was a very special day.

Tell us about your special day, was there a specific theme or style? Tell us a little about the setting, the styling and some of your favourite details…

Paul and I both wanted a simple but elevated aesthetic for the wedding- there was no particular theme or specific colours; just a look that came together organically from combined elements. We were more focussed on getting our friends and family together and having a good time!

We were keen to find a photographer who could capture the day in a spontaneous, documentary style as we did not want the photos to be overly posed or cliched, and Caro Weiss did a fantastic job.

Tell us about your main outfits:

Although I looked for a dress for a long time I just couldn’t find something that fitted the simple, understated look I had in mind and would still be suitable for a winter wedding. The closest thing I had seen was my mums dress, which was made by her mum, so I asked if I could wear it. I had a few small alterations made to modernise the dress, and it was perfect.

Paul has Scottish heritage so along with the groomsmen he wore a kilt in Blackwatch tartan and a grey tweed coat and vest. The colours of the tartan were picked up in the floral arrangements by Grace & Thorn with lots of dark foliage, blue thistle and green eucalyptus dotted with white flowers.

What were some of the most memorable/unique moments from the day?

Paul’s Aunt and Uncle had traveled down from Orkney for the wedding, and they surprised us by organising a traditional Scottish Cog. A Cog is a handcrafted wooden vessel used to serve a brew made from their family recipe. The Cog then is carried around from guest to guest by the bride and groom. It was a brilliant addition to the reception!

Any advice for other couples planning to spend the rest of their lives together?

Remember to stop and enjoy the day, as it’s over before you know it.
