Real Wedding: Katie & Simon – Photography Coralee Stone

The morning of the big day was super relaxed for us both – we each went out to breakfast with our respective families and friends, which was the perfect start to the day.

The most unique thing about our wedding was the location of the reception, in the historic St Kevin’s Arcade. It was the Friday after Guy Fawkes and during our first dance there were fireworks going off behind us through the big glass panes. During the day you can look through the old windows over Myers Park to the Sky Tower – we just love that spot. We had the tables lined up together in the middle of the arcade, immersed with all the little stores we’ve shopped at for years, with fairy lights, it was just perfect.

The other unique thing about our wedding was that we planned it in four months. Simon’s father was very ill and we wanted him to be there more than anything, He passed away just a few months after, so it was incredibly special to us that he was there and was able to make his ‘Father of the Groom’ speech.

The wedding was a true representation of everything we love. I suppose the style was vintage and a little boho, but nothing was planned to fit a particular style or theme. Everything was personally selected by us. What was important to us as well was that it felt relaxed and intimate.

We also tried to use local businesses where possible. I had a local jeweller I met at the Birkenhead Market make Simon’s wedding band, jewellery for the bridesmaids and the copper clips for our invites.

Our advice for those getting married would be to choose things that you want and that will make you happy. Even down to having TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’ playing at the reception if you want – everyone will love you for it. We also loved our ‘mini moon’ after the big day – we drove up north to a cottage just past Kerikeri and it was an amazing three days, exactly what we needed.
