Real Wedding: Kelly + Christian – Photography by Jessica Sim

We live in Melbourne where Christian has two restaurants, ‘Embla’ and ‘The Town Mouse’. I work as an illustrator and have an illustration agency called ‘Use New Art’ (see following artist profile in this issue). Our working lives don’t overlap that much and so when we spend time together it feels really special. We seem to enjoy doing the same things when we are not working – which is mostly eating, drinking or otherwise being lazy – and in between we give each other a lot of insight and understanding from our quite different experiences of the world.

We are both still very independent. It’s nice to be with someone who can open your eyes to different perspectives and challenge your way of thinking. We are both very focused on our work, but then when we come together we have this lovely little bubble of just us. We are pretty relaxed people and the main thing we wanted at our wedding was for our small group of friends and family to enjoy one another’s company. The weather was warm, we had enough food and booze to last us for a week (the wedding was a two-day affair), and everything pretty much fell into place. We didn’t have a theme, but to fit the location we really wanted the flowers to be overgrown, wild and messy. We had a banquet of food arrive to the tables so people could pick and choose what they wanted and just chat and relax. The reception was outdoors in the wilderness, it was beautiful as the sun went down and cast long golden shadows. Because we were in the middle of the bush at a private house, we could do whatever we wanted without a curfew or noise. A favourite part of the wedding was when we were sitting at the table after the speeches and we could see all the guests laughing and making friends. It was also super cute how the dog took it upon herself to sit front and centre in so many of the photos, she’s never been so well behaved! You feel very grown up; having someone you can call your husband or wife. It’s a nice feeling to know how you feel about each other. You get to snuggle up to that person every night and you can just be 100 percent yourself around them. Marriage for us is about relaxing and knowing the other person loves you just for being you.
