Planning our wedding was so much fun. We took more than two years and plans changed constantly, which was good because we could really fine-tune everything. Some things didn’t go to plan, but in the end it doesn’t matter. If you are surrounded by people who love you, that’s the main thing. We had to take numerous trips to Sicily to plan our wedding, and we got to know the local people well. We also discovered new places and had time to appreciate all of the island’s beauty. By the end, we knew exactly what we wanted. Our wedding took place over three days. The first night (our favourite) was a relaxed party in the village of Castelmola, above Taormina. The local bar made the cocktails; the restaurants made the food and added some décor; the local shepherd came to give us a taste of his amazing ricotta, and the son of a restaurant owner performed with his band. Styling was minimal, as the natural setting of the piazza is already astounding, with beautiful views everywhere you look. The second night was a beach party in a little fisherman’s place called Pizzichella. The location is beautiful, with a view of the magnificent Isola Bella. The third night was the actual wedding. Preparations took place in Casa Cuseni, a gem in the heart of Taormina, then the ceremony was in Chiesa Santa Caterina. When we came out of the church, the square was filled with people and tourists waiting to see us come out. Then, the bridesmaids and groomsmen started singing and walking through the streets, arm in arm, with all the people in the village following us. That was a magical moment. We felt like the whole village and community was celebrating with us. The best advice we could give to people planning a wedding is that the whole thing should be fun. And that a union is a conscious choice that demands respect and work.
